  1. 1754-1842. English pioneer and promoter of
  2. the improvements associated with the
  3. Agricultural Revolution. His innovations
  4. included regular manuring of the soil, the
  5. cultivation of fodder crops in association
  6. with corn, and the drilling of wheat and
  7. turnips. He also developed a fine flock of
  8. Southdown sheep at Holkham, Norfolk, which
  9. were superior to the native Norfolks, and
  10. encouraged his farm tenants to do likewise.
  11. These ideas attracted attention at the annual
  12. sheep shearings, an early form of
  13. agricultural show, which Coke held on his
  14. home farm from 1776. By the end of the
  15. century these had become major events, with
  16. many visitors coming to see and discuss new
  17. stock, crops, and equipment.
